Garmin StreetPilot C550

The Garmin StreetPilot C550 is new to the Garmin C500 range for 2006. The StreetPilot C550 is ready to go straight out of the box - all maps and software come pre-installed - no need to hook the C550 up to a PC prior to first use.

Both the Li-Ion rechargeable battery and GPS receiver are internal on the StreetPilot C500. The accuracy of the GPS receiver has been improved through the on-going development of newer chipsets.

The Garmin C550 is claimed to have a battery life of 8 hours between charges thus allowing the unit to be transferred easily between vehicles. Transferring between vehicles is straight-forward - possible allowing a family or business to share a satnav system.

The C550 comes with an automotive grade, anti-glare TFT LCD screen ensuring that colours are bright and clear. Controlling the system is straightforward using the touch-screen intuitive menu system.

As with other systems in this price range a number of great features are built in to the C550. The StreetPilot C550 can be used in conjunction with the user's Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to both make and receive calls - great hands-free functionality.

The C550 has built-in microphone and speakers - calls can be accepted by simply tapping the screen. Phone compatibility can be found on the Garmin website.

A unique feature of the StreetPilot C550 is the in-built GTM21 FM TMC traffic receiver which notifies the user of traffic delays, roadwork's etc if this information is available within the user's locality. Based on this information the C550 can automatically suggest alternative routes.

As you would expect, the unit provides both 2D and 3D mapping options, together with voice instructions - the StreetPilot C550 even speaks street names which makes journeys even less stressful.

A comprehensive Points of Interest (POI) database is pre-installed and further POI's, school zones and safety camera databases can be added to the C550. The Garmin POILoader software is available for free download from the Garmin website.

A new security feature of the Garmin StreetPilot C550 is the Garmin Lock - this requires the entry of a 4 figure PIN number to activate the unit. The unit can also be activated by taking it to a pre-determined location. The unit comes with an SD card expansion slot. The system also plays MP3 files for music on the move.

This is a comprehensive, professional satnav system and worthy of consideration.
