 Garmin StreetPilot C510
The StreetPilot C510 from Garmin comes ready to use straight out the box. There is no need to install any software or maps - new advances in technology allow the user to just "plug and play".
The new C500 series provides the same simple to use navigational tools as the previous C300 range but with a number of added improvements.
The increased sensitivity of the internal GPS receiver represents a marked step forward. The unit is quicker to acquire satellite signals, especially when driving in areas where signals can be lost - such as cities, wooded areas etc.
The colour LCD screen has an anti-glare coating to allow the driver to use the C510 in bright sunlight. The touch-sensitive screen allows the user to operate the C510 by way of the intuitive menu-operated system software installed in the StreetPilot C510.
Theft of satellite navigation systems from vehicles is becoming an increasing problem in the UK. The new C500 series uses the Garmin Lock technology - this disables the unit from use until the user enters a 4 digit PIN to unlock it or takes the unit to a pre-determined location. Although, in our opinion, this doesn't act as direct deterrent to theft, it is a step in right direction.
Regional European mapping is included - please check with merchants the mapping data that is shipped with your satnav system. Usually for the UK this will be street-level UK mapping data and European regional map coverage - check with the vendor.
The unit contains a rechargeable battery that Garmin suggest has an 8 hour life between charges. The actual time will depend on the ambient operating conditions - with battery life being shorter in very cold and very hot conditions.
Maps can be viewed in either 2 or 3 dimensions. SD memory cards can be used with the unit, thus allowing the user to expand the systems memory should they wish to. The StreetPilot C510 comes with a Points of Interest (POI) database containing details of such amenities as petrol station, hotels, golf courses, post offices, cash machines etc. Choose an amenity form the list local to the satnav systems current position and the C510 will navigate you to it.
Additional Points of Interest can be uploaded to the unit including alerts for speed zones and safety cameras to make your journey safer.
Real-time traffic information is available through the optional FM TMC integrated traffic information receiver available separately.
All in, this is a very capable unit and represents good value for money for the first-time user or those people moving up from a more basic system. |
